JUNE 2008

30.06.08: CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP – The club championship has reached the 'business end' of the tournament and in the quarter finals, as you would expect at this late stage of the competition, there are four great ties to look out for. It's difficult to pick a 'tie of the round' so I'm plumping for the ‘new boys’ encounter between Ron Collie & Kevin Brunton to perhaps be the closest match. Good luck to all the quarter finalists for their respective matches. The full line up is as follows:

Vince Stewart v David Briggs
Ian Ringsell v Alistair Murray
Ron Collie v Kevin Brunton
Scott Brown v John Wright

29.06.08: UNDER 35'S FINAL – This year's final was contested between Craig Stewart and Greg Mackie on Thursday last week. In the end Craig ran out a convincing winner to claim this title for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to Craig and commiserations to Greg.

28.06.08: ANGUS LEAGUE – We finished our season on a high with a good 57-47 victory over Muirhead on Friday. Unfortunately, this win didn't move us any higher up in the table, even though all the teams immediately above lost their matches. We have finished sixth this year, although only on shots difference to the 5th, 4th and 3rd placed teams. Our latest win was notable only for preventing Muirhead gaining promotion to Division 1 – second place team Lochlands lost their final match and a win for Muirhead would have seen them promoted on shots difference at Lochlands expense. Congratulations to Abbey and Lochlands on their successful league campaigns and hopefully Craigie can do better next year and mount a serious challenge for the Division 2 title and promotion.

19.06.08: ANGUS TOP TEN - The sheet is up in the club for names of those wishing to be considered for selection for the Angus Top Ten knockout tournament. The closing date for entries is 30th June so anyone wishing to take part should get their name down now.

19.06.08: CITY OF DUNDEE CHAMPIONSHIPS - The sheet is up in the club for names of those wishing to be considered for selection for our 'City' championships. The closing date for entries is 3rd August so anyone wishing to take part should get their name down now.

19.06.08: ANGUS CHAMPIONSHIPS - We had a great week in the second round of the Angus Championships with all our players coming through their respective matches with good victories. In the singles John Wright won 21-17 and Craig Stewart continued his excellent run of form with a 21-12 win in the junior singles. Our triple of Jim Irving, Alistair Murray and Kevin Brunton won convincingly, 19-8, as did our rink, with Alex Sherman, Angus Cossans, Alan Brown and Tony Hume winning 19-10. Good luck to all our players for their quarter final ties next week.

18.06.08: UNDER 35 SINGLES - The Under 35's has reached the final stage with the final due to be played on Thusday 26th June. Playing in the final are Greg Mackie and Craig Stewart, who progressed through from the semi-finals earlier this week. A good match is aniticipated so let's hope for a big turn-out to watch the match and cheer on the young lads. Your webmaster will be there to bring you full details and some photos from the final.

18.06.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The selection committee has picked the team for this week's penultimate Angus League match at home to Longforgan. Although promotion is beyond us now, hopefully the team can record a win and help to ensure a high league placing come the end of the league season. The team lines up as follows:

Rink 1: Ian Ringsell, Russell Brannan, Ron Collie & Vince Stewart
Rink 2: Stuart Jeans, Alan Brown, George Gray & Kevin Brunton
Rink 3: Gary Anderson, Alistair Murray, John Wright & Tony Hume

15.06.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - Unfortunately, our Angus League team lost narrowly 50-45 in Friday's away fixture at Abbey. This defeat removes any possibility of promotion to Division 1 this year as we remain in sixth place. We have two matches left in Division 2 this year, with Friday's match being a home tie against bottom club Longforgan. Hopefully we can win this match and our final game against Muirhead to ensure a reasonably high finish in this year's table.

14.06.08: ANGUS CHAMPIONSHIPS - We had a mixed first round of this year's Angus Championships. In the senior competitions only Frank Moore was successful in the singles, winning 21-9. Our senior pairs, triples and rink all lost their respective matches. We did better in the main tournament with John Wright winning in the singles 21-18, our triples winning 18-8 and the fours winning 23-8. Hopefully we will some more good results in this week's second round. Good luck to all our competitors for their matches on Monday and Tuesday.

10.06.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The selection committee have picked the team for this week's important Division 2 match away to Abbey in Arbroath. To have any realistic chance of clinching second place, and promotion, we must win all of our remaining three matches. Abbey have won all their games so far this season and this will be a tough match for us but hopefully our lads can play to their potential and record a win. The team lines up as follows:

Rink 1: Alan Brown, Alistair Murray, George Gray & Tony Hume
Rink 2: Kenny Penman, Jack Reilly, John Wright & Kevin Brunton
Rink 3: Frank Moore, Russell Brannan, Ron Collie & Vince Stewart
Reserves: Angus Cossans, Jim Philip & Ian Ringsell

09.06.08: FALCONER CUP - The drawsheet is now up in the club for our second club singles tournament. The first round of matches are scheduled to be completed by this coming Sunday, with the second round completion date 30th June. This competition continues through to the final on Friday 18th August.

07.06.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - Our promotion campaign suffered a setback last night as the team lost by four shots at Monifieth, the match score being 40-36. We remain in sixth place in the Division 2 table and, due to other results, still look to have an outside chance of making second place. To have any chance we must win our remaining three matches and hope some other results go in our favour. Next week's fixture is away to runaway leaders Abbey, so hopefully we will be able to field a full strength team to give us the best chance of winning this crucial match.. I'll bring you news of the team selection next week.

06.06.08: SCOTTISH CHAMPS: CRAIG VICTORIOUS! - Last night saw another famous chapter written in Craigie history with only our fifth ever Scottish District 4 win! Huge congratulations to Craig Stewart, who produced another superb performance on his way to winning the Junior Singles area title at Broughty, defeating Ryan Burnett from Lochlands 21-15 in an excellent match. Craig's victory rounded off a fantastic run of results and he can now go forward to the Scottish Championship finals at Ayr with plenty of confidence. Craig got off to a great start and built a 7-2 lead after 6 ends. The next few ends were split evenly but then Craig surged ahead, scoring a 2 and a 3 in consecutive ends to lead 14-5. Ryan fought back, scoring four singles and a double in the next few ends and after 20 ends the score stood at 17-11 to Craig. In the next end Craig scored a double to lead 19-11 but Ryan fought back again and scored a double of his own in the next end, leaving the score at 19-13. Craig was not to be denied however, and wrapped up a convincing and well deserved victory with a single in the 25th end of the match. Congratulations again to Craig on a fantastic result and he goes on with best wishes from all at Craigie for his trip to Ayr for the Scottish Finals. You can see a few photos of our young champ during the final by clicking HERE, or via the 'Photos Page'.

05.06.08: ANGUS CHAMPIONSHIPS - Our representatives have been selected for the upcoming Angus Championships. The senior ties are to be played on Monday 9th June, with the other matches scheduled for the following evening. Good luck to all our players for their respective matches. Special mention goes out to several players: Vince Stewart for his Champion of Champions campaign - Vince won the Angus Singles title last year, becoming only the second Craigie player in history to achieve this, so let's hope he can emulate that form and bring home the big one! Also John Wright, who represents Craigie in an external singles for the first time following his excellent Falconer win last year. Finally, good luck to Angus Cossans and Fred Hutcheon who, I believe, are competing for the first time in the Angus Championships. Our competitors line up as follows:

Champion of Champions: Vince Stewart
Singles: John Wright
Junior Singles: Craig Stewart
Pairs: Richard MacDonald & Gary Anderson
Triples: Jim Irving, Alistair Murray & Kevin Brunton
Fours: Alex Sherman, Angus Cossans, George Gray & Tony Hume
Senior Singles: Frank Moore
Senior Pairs: Jim Murray & Ally Thomson
Senior Triples: Ian Ringsell, Jim Simpson & George Duncan
Senior Fours: Fred Hutcheon, George McLaren, Norrie Robertson & Ron Collie.

05.06.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The team has been selected for this week's crucial away match against Monifieth. Several changes have been necessary due to the touring team being away on 'duty' this week. Fortunately, the back ends of the rinks remain virtually unchanged and the bulk of the changes are 'front end'. Hopefully this will ensure continuity and stability and help us build on the last two week's victories. The team lines up as below, good luck to the team for the match:

Rink 1: Jim Irving, Jack Reilly, George Gray & Vince Stewart
Rink 2: Ian Ringsell, Archie Muir, John Wright & Kevin Brunton
Rink 3: Alan Brown, Jim Simpson, Tony Hume & Scott Brown
Reserves: Kenny Penman & Frank Moore.
