MAY 2008
31.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The team recorded a handsome victory over Broughty last night, winning by 21 shots, 57-36. While this result hasn't moved us up any actual positions in the Division 2 table, things are starting to tighten up for the second promotion spot as Lochlands lost to Monifieth and Muirhead were defeated by Abbey. Speaking of Abbey, they are continuing to set the pace at the top of the league with their fifth win on the trot and look strong favourites to go back up to the first division at the first time of asking. We have another crucial match against Monifieth on their green next week and several team regulars are away 'on tour' so there will be enforced changes to the team. Here's hoping the players that come into the side can do a good job and help ensure a third win in a row to maintain our challenge for promotion.
31.05.08: CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - The Craigie Club Championship has reached the third round stage and, obviously, there's plenty to play for for all those still involved in the race for the ultimate prize. There are some cracking ties in the third round and I think the following matches will be well worth a look... Reigning champ Vince Stewart plays Frank Moore and while Vince will start favourite this could be an exciting encounter. Also, in perhaps the pick of the third round ties, two previous club champs square up when Scott Brown plays Alan 'Prez' Brown in the 'Battle of the Broons'. Other notable ties include Alec Sherman against David Briggs and Russell Brannan against Alec Swann. Good luck to all players for their third round matches.
30.05.08: SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS - Last night we had two hopes playing in the semi-finals of the District 4 Scottish Championships and we finished up with a 50% success rate. Congratulations to young Craig Stewart, who recorded a thumping 21-8 win in his Junior Singles semi-final. Commiserations go to our rink led by Scott Brown, who were narrowly beaten 15-12 by a rink from Parkview. Craig now plays in the district final next Thursday, 5th June, at Broughty BC against opposition from Lochlands. Hopefully we will see a large contingent from Craigie there to support Craig as he continues his quest for glory (and a trip to Ayr)! Your webmaster will be there to bring you news and photos from the final.
28.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The selection committee has picked the team for this week's crucial home Division 2 fixture against Broughty. There is only one change to last week's winning team with George Gray coming in for Jim Philip at lead in Vince Stewart's rink. Good luck to the lads for the match - hopefully we can build on last week's away victory over Carnoustie. The team lines up as follows:
Rink 1: George Gray, Russell Brannan, Ron Collie & Vince Stewart
Rink 2: Ian Ringsell, Angus Cossans, John Wright & Kevin Brunton
Rink 3: Alan Brown, Alistair Murray, Tony Hume & Scott Brown
Reserves: Gary Anderson, Jim Simpson & Jack Reilly26.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The team got back to winning ways on Friday with a 46-38 victory over Carnoustie. While we've not moved up any places in the table, it's good to record our second win of the league campaign and get some momentum going again. Here's hoping the team can get another victory in this Friday's home fixture against Broughty. I'll bring you news of this week's team selection as soon as I get it.
26.05.08: SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS - Last week saw two of our representatives progress through to the semi-finals of the District competition and they are now only two matches away from a trip to Ayr for the finals. Craig Stewart had a convincing 21-13 win over Forfar in the Junior Singles and our rink (Alistair Murray, Russell Brannan, Jim McCartney and Scott Brown) won a close match against Broughty Castle 16-15. The semi-finals take place this coming Thursday with Craig playing against the Monifieth representative at Broughty Castle and our Four playing Parkview at Canmore. Good luck to all the lads for their matches.
21.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The selection committee have made two changes to the team for this week's important Angus League match away to Carnoustie. Regular skip Scott Brown is avalailable for selection again and takes over from Jim Davie who, coincidentally, is unavailable for selection from this week. Alan 'Prez' Brown also returns to the team this week. Good luck to the team - here's hoping we can get back on track with a resounding victory. The team lines up as follows:
Rink 1: Jim Philip, Russell Brannan, Ron Collie & Vince Stewart
Rink 2: Ian Ringsell, Angus Cossans, John Wright & Kevin Brunton
Rink 3: Alan Brown, Alistair Murray, Tony Hume & Scott Brown
Reserves: George Gray, Jim Simpson & Jack Reilly18.05.08: CITY OF DUNDEE BA - The City of Dundee team played host to Northern Counties at Craigie yesterday in their second Andrew Hamilton Cities & Counties match of this season. The weather was excellent and the City lads played a great match to record a 119-96 win. The City had five winning rinks, whilst the other was a draw. Our very own Tony Hume is City President this year, so this fixture was especially poignant for the club. The day ran very smoothly and was a huge success. Many thanks to all the Craigie members who gave up their Saturday afternoon to help out with all the tasks needed to put on a county match. You can see photos of the teams and some pics from the match on the new City of Dundee website by clicking HERE or via the link on our Links Page. I've also put pictures of the City team and our Craigie representatives on this site - you can see these via the Photos Page or by clicking HERE.
18.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The team had to be slightly re-jigged after the withdrawal of Kenny Penman, with Alistair Murray coming into the team. Unfortunately, we suffered another loss this week, going down by 5 shots, 51-46 to Letham. Amazingly, even though we lost again, we've actually gone up two places to sixth place in the Division 2 table! This loss now leaves any hope of promotion hanging by a thread and, realistically, we will need to win all our remaining fixtures and hope some other results go our way. This week's fixture is away to Carnoustie, who have yet to score any points this season, so we really need to win this match to keep our season going. I'll bring you news of this week's team after the selection committee have had their meeting on Monday night.
16.05.08: SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS - This week saw the next round of matches played in the local District Championships and we had a mixed bag of results. On Monday Ron Collie's senior fours rink won through, but Frank Moore's rink lost out. On Tuesday night John & Kath Wright lost out in the Mixed Triples. Last night's winners were Vince Stewart in the Singles, Craig Stewart in the Junior Singles and our Four consisting of Alistair Murray, Russell Brannan, Jim McCartney & Scott Brown. Losing out last night were our Pairs and Triples. Good luck to all our winners for next week's district quarter finals.
15.05.08: SENIOR SINGLES - The tournament draw is now up in the club for the Senior Singles competition. First round matches are to be played by Sunday 1st June with the competition running through to the final on Tuesday 26th August. Good luck to all the 'older' gents for this competition.
15.05.08: SENIOR PAIRS - The sheet is up in the club for names for the Senior Pairs competition. Any 'senior' members wishing to enter a pair should get their names down now. Closing date for entries is Sunday 25th May 2008.
14.05.08: STANDING CUP FOURS - Last night saw the final of the second tournament of this 2008 season. The final of the Standing Cup was contested by Gordon Samson, Jim McAulay, Sid Clarke & Russell Brannen playing against Greg Mackie, Jack Reilly, George Gray & Jim Irving. A good match was won by Russell's rink by a score of 13-7. Extra congratulations go out to Gordon & Jim for, not only reaching their first Craigie final, but coming away with a winners trophy. Well done to all the participants for giving the watching crowd a great final to watch.
14.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - Our team has been altered slightly for this week's away match against Letham. The three rinks line up as follows:
Rink 1: Jim Philip, Russell Brannan, Ron Collie & Vince Stewart
Rink 2: Ian Ringsell, Angus Cossans, John Wright & Kevin Brunton
Rink 3: Jim Irving, Kenny Penman, Tony Hume & Jim Davie
Reserves: Alan Brown, Jim Simpson & Alistair Murray.12.05.08: STANDING CUP FOURS - Tonight saw the semi-finals played in this year's Standing Cup. Unfortunately, the semi-final between Jim Irving and Kenny Penman's rinks was a walk-over for Jim's team as third Ross Mackie could not play due to an ankle injury and Kenny's rink had to scratch. The other semi-final was a very close and exciting affair with Russell Brannan's rink beating Ali Strachan's rink by one shot in an extra end. The final will be played tomorrow night at 6.15 - good luck to both teams for the match.
10.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - Unfortunately, we lost heavily in last night's Angus League match against Lochlands. Although most of our team performed well, a certain Darren Burnett showed just why he's been a multiple outdoor world champion with a tremendous display to ensure the points went back to Arbroath. The final score was 62-40 in favour of Lochlands. We've slipped down a few places in the Division 2 table due to this big reverse but hopefully the team can bounce back in next week's away fixture against bottom club Letham.
09.05.08: SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS - I can report on a very successful first week of matches for Craigie in the Scottish District 4 championships - all our representatives won their games and are through to the next round. On Monday both Senior Four rinks won their matches and on Tuesday John & Kath Wright won their opening match in the Mixed Pairs. Last night all our players won their matches in the main competitions: Vince Stewart in the singles, Craig Stewart in the Junior Singles, Alec Sherman & Tony Hume in the pairs, Alan Brown, Kenny Penman & John Wright in the Triples and finally Alistair Murray, Russell Brannan, Jim McCartney & Scott Brown in the Fours. Well done to everyone and let's hope we can keep these good results going!
09.05.08: STANDING CUP FOURS - The Standing Cup has reached the semi-final stage with the teams listed below contesting these matches on Monday 12th May. The final is scheduled to be played the next night, Tuesday 13th May. Good luck to all the players for their respective matches.
Gordon Samson, Jim McAulay, Sid Clarke & Russell Brannen

Greg Mackie, Jack Reilly, George Gray & Jim Irving09.05.08: CITY OF DUNDEE BA - The City play their first match in this season's Andrew Hamilton Trophy tomorrow and we have four representatives in the team. Vince Stewart, John Wright, Kevin Brunton and George Gray are in the team, with Craig Stewart listed in the pool of reserves. There is also a new City of Dundee BA website on the 'net and you can see all the details of 'City' going's on by clicking HERE. The website is the creation of our very own John Wright - good work John!
05.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The selectors have remained faithful to the three winning rinks from our opening fixture by naming a virtually unchanged line-up for this week's home match against Lochlands. Here's hoping the team can repeat last week's excellent performance and win again this week. The rinks for Friday's game are as follows:
Rink 1: Alistair Murray, Russell Brannan, Ron Collie & Vince Stewart
Rink 2: Ian Ringsell, John Wright Jnr, Tony Hume & Kevin Brunton
Rink 3: Jim Irving, Kenny Penman, George Gray & Jim Davie
Reserves: Alec Sherman, Jim Philip, Angus Cossans, Alan Brown & Jim Simpson05.05.08: MARY MURRAY MIXED TRIPLES - The names sheet is now up in the club for this annual charity competition. This year the tournament will be played on two consecutive Sundays, 29th June and 6th July. Entry is £6 per team and the first 24 teams down on the sheet will play. The closing date for entries is Friday 20th June so members wishing to enter a team should get their names down now.
03.05.08: ANGUS/CITY UNDER 25 TRIAL - We have two young bowlers selected for this year's junior county trials - David Briggs and Craig Stewart. The trial is scheduled to take place at Carnoustie West End on Sunday 11th May at 11am. Players should report at 10.30am. Good luck to David and Craig - play well lads!
03.05.08: ANGUS LEAGUE - The selectors were forced to make a last minute change to the team as Alec Sherman called off and was replaced by Kenny Penman. This opening fixture away at Fairfield was considered a tough match but the team played well, with all three rinks up and Craigie winning by thirteen shots overall, 52-39. No doubt, this was a great start to the Angus League campaign, especially with our new players gelling well with their new Craigie colleagues and all three rinks winning their respective games. Let's hope the team can build on this good result with another win when we entertain Lochlands on Friday next week.
02.05.08: DUNCAN TRIPLES FINAL - The Duncan Triples final was played last night with teams comprising Gordon Bruce, Kenny Penman and Scott Brown playing against Jim Monks Jnr, Ian McLaughlan and John Livie. John's triple got off to a good start, scoring five unanswered shots in the first three ends. Thereafter, shots were traded between the teams until the score stood at 9-5 for John's triple going into the final end. Scott's triple then scored four shots to take the match into an extra end shoot-out. John's team got a counting bowl in early and held on to win the trophy. Congratulations to Jim, Ian and John on their win, with extra congratulations to John and Ian on gaining their first winning trophy at Craigie.
